VDR NAVIGATIONAL AUDITS
See the Bridge as It Actually Operates.
Our VDR navigational audit service analyses recorded bridge data — audio, radar, ECDIS, helm inputs, and alarms — to reveal how your fleet navigates under real conditions, free from observer bias.

THE PROBLEM
Pre-audits only show you what crews prepared for.
The Hawthorne Effect is well-documented in maritime operations. When a crew knows they are being observed, behaviour changes. A traditional pre-inspection visit captures performance for an audience. The VDR captures everything else.
— Observer bias distorts findings. Bridge teams perform differently during attended visits — the real operational culture stays hidden until vetting day, when it is too late to close the gap.
— Single-day attendance misses systemic patterns. Document checks cannot reveal how the bridge team communicates under pressure, manages alarms, or executes a port approach at 0300 on a routine passage.
— Fleet-wide patterns go undetected. When vessel reports exist in isolation, recurring cross-fleet behaviours — the ones that consistently drive SIRE observations — are never identified at the management level.
— The gap between procedure and practice widens. The SMS says one thing. The VDR shows another. Vetting inspectors find it immediately.
“The VDR doesn’t know the auditor is watching. That’s why it tells the truth”
What We Do
Our services. One objective picture.
Each service can be engaged independently or as part of a fleet enrolment programme.
VDR-Based Navigational Audit
We analyse recorded bridge data across routine voyages and high-workload situations — port approaches, restricted visibility passages, pilotage, and anchorage operations. Audio recordings reveal communication quality and BRM practices. Radar and ECDIS data show how navigational tools are actually used. Findings are benchmarked against SIRE 2.0, Rightship, and COLREGS expectations. Every audit includes an executive video summary of key findings.
Fleet Enrolment Programme Volume
Volume-based pricing for fleets of three vessels or more. Vessels are audited on a rolling schedule — each report feeds into a quarterly fleet benchmarking pack delivered to shore management, identifying systemic patterns across the fleet rather than isolated vessel findings. Executive video summaries included for each vessel audit.
How We Work
A three-phase process built on data before conclusions.
Every VDR navigational audit follows a structured process to ensure findings are accurate, contextualised, and actionable.
01
Voyage Selection & Data Request
We agree the audit scope with the shore team and request VDR data for selected voyages — typically port approaches, restricted visibility passages, and open sea legs. Voyage selection is guided by the vessel’s trading pattern and any known areas of concern.
03
Written Report & Debrief
A full written report is delivered to the shore team covering all findings with supporting evidence references. A debrief call with the DPA or fleet superintendent walks through findings, corrective actions, and follow-up priorities.
02
VDR Data Analysis
Audio, radar, ECDIS, helm input, and alarm data are analysed systematically. Findings are cross-referenced against the vessel’s SMS procedures, passage plan, and applicable COLREGS requirements. Each finding is graded using a tied framework.
04
Executive Video Summary
Key findings are compiled into a short narrated video — structured for senior management review and third-party auditor briefings. No technical jargon. Findings presented in the same format a vetting inspector would use.
